Generative design in combination with additive manufacturing allows for the ideation and creation of products with specific physical and performance properties all while optimizing for weight and or stiffness. In the context of a bicycle stem this resulted in a 3d printed titanium stem which is far lighter than a traditionally designed and manufactured version.
Analysis
While the results of generative design studies by definition adhere to specific criteria for material selection, manufacturing, and load cases; verification of these qualities is of the utmost importance. I can verify through Finite Element analysis that my improved generative version of the original part behaves in a manner which still performs adequately in the intended use case.
